It has been a long standing tradition for Moreton Hall to enter students in a range of categories at the Cheshire Festival of Speech and Drama. This year was no exception and the Spoken English Department was proud to claim over sixteen trophies.

Maya who was placed first for her Shakespeare monologue taken from A Midsummer Night’s Dream commented: “I took on the role of Helena from Act 2, Scene 3. Playing a young woman who is confused and vulnerable was easy to relate to. Helena is caught in a love triangle and is desperately trying to make sense of other people’s behaviour.”

Reflecting on her win, she added: “I’m grateful that all of my hard work has paid off.”

Eloise who was also placed first for sight reading and for her poetry readings said: “I took the theme of murder and selected three poems – A Case of Murder, Education for Leisure, and The Lesson – which I compared thematically.”

She too had worked hard to achieve her success. Noting the high quality of teaching she’d received in preparation she stated: “My Spoken English Teacher Miss Halsall-Williams offered guidance, constructive criticism, and pointed me in the right direction when it came to selecting my poems.”

And it was Miss Halsall-Williams who had the last word: “Moreton Hall has received another outstanding set of results. The girls were supportive of each other and succeeded against other high quality performers.”
