The National Youth Theatre is a youth arts organisation which trains and showcases performers and theatre technicians. There are several different courses available to apply to including: acting, lighting and sound; scenery and prop-making; stage management; and costume. I applied for Costume and was thrilled to be offered a place.
I first applied to National Youth Theatre online and then went to Birmingham on the 17th February for a twenty minute interview. I took with me a series of sketches of costume designs with fabric and photographs of my sewing, as well as my art books and portfolio. I was asked several questions about my work and ability to work with others in a team.
If successful, applicants then complete a summer course before becoming a National Youth Theatre member. I will be going to the costume course in London which is from the 20th August to the 30th August. Members are then eligible to audition for the company’s productions which are staged in The West End in London, internationally and around the UK. - Chloe Whittaker (L6)
