Claudia Thomas (U6) has been awarded this year's Gladstone essay-writing prize. She writes:
"The Gladstone Prize is a national essay competition with various titles given each year. The title that I chose was: “What is the function of Book 8 in Virgil’s Aeneid?”, which outlines the significance and influence of this particular book to the rest of the Aeneid. The competition is open to students across the country, under the age of 18. I was amazed to hear that I won this and look forward to it being published in Omnibus Magazine in the Spring.
I find the Classical World extremely interesting as, in my opinion, the foundations of modern society are all down to the influence of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. For me, Classics is the perfect mix of literature and history and is a part of history that I’d never really looked at until I started Classical Civilisation at A Level."
