Moreton First Announce New Kyffin Williams Scholarship

Moreton First is delighted to announce the launch of the new Kyffin Williams Scholarship for Boys.

The scholarship has been created in memory of Sir John ‘Kyffin’ Williams – former pupil of the school and a Welsh landscape painter who was widely regarded as the defining artist of Wales during the 20th Century. A gifted individual – Kyffin’s legacy continues to this day.

The scholarship welcomes applications from boys entering the Junior years who can show their willingness to follow in the footsteps of former pupil, Sir Kyffin Williams. His dogged determination and kindly manners are traits promoted and valued every day at Moreton First.

After his preparatory education at Moreton Hall, Kyffin moved on to larger schools and eventually studied at London’s Slade School of Fine Art in 1941.

He is remembered for his remarkable resilience; turning disappointment in to success. On failing the army medical entrance in 1937, Kyffin turned his attention to painting thus discovering the artistic talent for which he was knighted in 1999.  Through his own persistence he developed this underlying gift, eventually developing his highly distinctive palette-knife style.

Kyffin Williams was a man of compassion which critics believe is evident in his astute portraits: catching likeness with a flair which belied the bold slabs of oil paint, gaining their strength from what he read in the eyes of the subject.

To be a person of determination and generosity of spirit embodies what we hope to reinforce in all Moreton First children.

Moreton First is holding a 6+ Awards Day on Tuesday 13th March where children are invited to an exciting assessment day composed of workshops enabling children to show their potential in sport, performing and creative arts or academic areas.

Awards will be made for budding talent in Academics, Art, Music, Sport or Drama, and for promise and potential to be a charismatic and well-rounded individual. Means-tested bursaries which may be worth up to 100% of annual school fees will also be available for outstanding candidates.
