In what was their first competitive Tag Rugby event of the year, Moreton First put in a formidable display as they came second in their group at the Oswestry Rugby Club Tag Rugby Festival.
Year 5 and 6 have been really enjoying their training sessions, and the first fixture saw that excitement combine with a notable sense of determination from the whole squad, as they scored three tries whilst retaining a clean sheet in defence.
In what was probably the game of the tournament, Moreton put in a back to the wall performance in defeat to Trefonnen in their second fixture. The eventual 5-4 score line should give some indication as to the open style of the match. The entire squad showed grit and determination, refusing to let their heads drop when they went 3-0 down. Solid running and offloading led to some excellently worked tries to get back into the match, and it was only a well worked individual try from Trefonnen that denied Moreton a draw at the death.
In the final fixture of the pool, the team snatched victory in the dying seconds with a last gasp try against Morda. After trading tries, the score stood at 2-2. It was fitting that Moreton’s best try of the tournament would be their last, as the team kept their heads and executed a fantastic final passage of play to finish the game 3-2 winners.
Despite being beaten to the semi-finals by Trefonnen, Moreton First showed great promise, and the whole squad put in a performance to be proud of.
