Moreton Skiers Crowned Best Team In National Competition

Four Moreton girls were crowned winners at the British Schoolgirls Races 2017.

This large scale event attracts competitive skiers from all over the UK and over 150 pupils made the journey to Flaine, France, in order to compete.  The Moreton Team, Alysha (L5), Charlotte (U4), Freya (L5) and Georgie (U4) returned to Shropshire victorious, with 8 medals in tow and a new title to their name – the Best Overall Team in the unregistered racer category.

The British Schoolgirl Races are renowned for being the starting point and precursor of many successful skiing careers. Olympic ski champion, Chemmy Alcott commented: “Flaine has always been integral to me as a ski racer and ski fan. It is where my incredible passion for ski racing started.”

The competition was attended by Britain’s brightest and best aspiring skiing stars. Despite the wet snow and slushy conditions, the Moreton team sped their way to victory with consistently clean and fast runs. The fairly rutted course added an extra challenging element to the race; but this didn’t deter the Moreton team as they kept a level of composure beyond their racing years. Moreton Skier, Charlotte (U4) commented: “It was an amazing experience. Any nerves I had, I left them in the start gate as I raced to the finish.”

Skiing their way to victory, the team flew through slaloms and giant slaloms to achieve some fantastic individual and overall results - bringing home four 1st places, three 2nds and 'Best Overall Team' in the unregistered racer category. These achievements are the result of both hard work and determination from the racers and the dedicated team surrounding them. The continued support from tour agency Ski 2 (www.ski-2.com) and the specialist training from racing extraordinaire John Stewart – Ski 2 race trainer, made this goal a reality.

Rachel Randle, Head of Enrichment Activities, commented: “I couldn't have been more proud of the Moreton girls. It took not only technically accurate skiing but great strength of character to race in the manner that they did.”
