Near the end of last term, five intrepid members of the Lower Sixth Physics set entered the British Physics Olympiad AS Challenge. This is one of the most prestigious and difficult competitions in the UK and is hosted by the University of Oxford, supported by the Ogden Trust and the Institute of Physics.
The work is based on the AS Physics specification but with the questions exceptionally demanding in terms of the student’s ability to solve problems and apply knowledge to new and challenging contexts.
The results were very pleasing indeed with Cherry, Pauline and Phoebe all achieving Silver awards, placing them in the top 11% nationally. Olivia and Megan both achieved a well-deserved commendation for their entries. Cherry deserves a special mention for being agonisingly close to a Gold award (1 mark away!) which would have put her in the top 5% of all entrants.
