Moreton’s Senior Maths Team recorded their best ever result at the Senior Mathematics Team Challenge, being placed second overall. The team Xu Wenxin (Nicole), Luo Xinyuan (Rita), Phoebe Jackson and Georgie Lang travelled to Chester for the regional qualifier.
The girls had high expectations and as Moreton had never previously made a top 3 finish in this event there was a sense of nervousness on the journey. However, a buoyant and determined attitude pervaded, and after the warm up the team were in top form cruising through the group round with every question correct. The pressure was now firmly on as the team split into pairs to tackle the cross-number round and the demanding, against the clock, relay round.
Another thrilling performance in the second round ensured they were still highly placed in the top 5 teams (with exact placings not being revealed) with many local rivals such as King’s School and Queen’ Schools of Chester, Abbeygate, Wirral Grammar School and Ruthin School amongst the 15 competitors. The team held their nerve in the final tense round and left all bar one team in their wake. This commendable performance resulted in Moreton’s best finish to date in this competition with our first ever podium result, second place.
