Saoirse Nyhan (L5) was awarded the Peter Wheeler Prize at the Malpas Arts and Literary Festival for her short story 'The Gift'.
Having been given only the title and an hour to work with in a GCSE lesson in school, she went on to write her winning entry based around stories told to her as a child by her father. The top two entrants from her age group (11-18) went through to the finals and had their entries read out in front of a packed crowd at the Festival.
Having never entered a writing competition before Saoirse commented, "I was very surprised to win, I've always enjoyed writing but this is the first time I have ever won a prize for it." She was awarded her trophy in front of an audience of other competitors and parents.
'The Gift' will appear in this year's Moretonian Magazine.
