Matthew Dennison Shropshire Book Launch

Matthew Dennison unveiled the real Vita Sackville -West in conversation with BBC Radio 4 Producer and Presenter, Mike Greenwood at Moreton Hall on Friday 17th October. Fast-paced, fascinating and witty, Dennison's insight into the life of this colourful character resulted in a sell-out of signed copies of his new book - Behind the Mask: The Life of Vita Sackville-West.

Aristocrat, literary celebrity, 'Rose Queen', devoted wife, lesbian, recluse, iconoclast - Vita Sackville-West was many things, but she was never straightforward.

A troubled upbringing and a powerful family history gave Vita a brave, imaginative yet sometimes cruel character.

This bravery, imagination, serious style of writing and sense of vocation in her work has inspired Matthew Dennison to diseminate her story. He does not think enough credit is given for her charming work, his two favourites being 'Family History' and 'Gottfreid Künstler'.

The whole project took two years to complete. Matthew Dennison particularly enjoyed writing about her upbringing and early marriage. Of all the books and biographies he has written, Vita seems to be the person everyone is most intrigued by. Her life is full of surprises and is sometimes shocking even by today's standards.
