Five Moreton tennis players and three members of the PE staff were lucky enough to be invited to join 13 county players from as far as Cumbria and Gloucester for a tennis camp with Judy Murray, GB women’s Team Captain.
The aim of the day was to support and inspire female players and coaches in the hope that they will continue with their training and help develop women’s tennis in the region, thereby strengthening the pipeline of future players for Fed Cup selection.
Training involved a swift succession of fast-paced drills designed to challenge mentally as well as physically. A short break for lunch and a talk from Cathie Sabin, President of the LTA, was followed by a chat with Judy who entertained us with stories from her ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ and GB Team Captain experiences. The afternoon involved matches with a difference, including playing a “cheat” card, much to the delight of Mrs Simlett Groves.
We are all very grateful to Alison McDonald, Head Tennis Coach at Moreton, for both organising the day and pulling a few strings to enable the Moreton team to participate in such a high-level event.
