U19 North School's Tournament

Moreton Hall’s 1st Lacrosse Team have been crowned U19s North School’s Champions, and progress to the national tournament in 2015. Moreton Hall’s lacrosse talent was represented in force, with three full squads making the journey across the Pennines to York. The tournament saw the 1st Team take on the first tier of schools from across the North of England, whilst the 2nd and 3rd Team found themselves competing in the same group; Moreton being the only school to field a 3rd Team at 2nd Team level.

Bea Gascoigne, Moreton Hall’s Sports Captain, represented Moreton’s victorious 1st Team throughout the tournament. “After we lost our first game by 1 goal, we all knew the pressure was on,” Bea explained, “It was that pressure that really drove the team forward. Some fantastic victories followed; we dispatched Queen Margaret’s 1st Team 8-1, and Bolton 8-2. Our final match against Queens was rather memorable. Confusion in the scoring meant that we went into the fixture believing we had to win the game by 11 goals. We really went for it, and it was a huge display of attacking lacrosse. We ended up winning the game 16 – 0, after which we were told the game only had to be won by 1 goal!”

The Moreton Hall 2nd Team finished a close second in their group, losing only one of their seven fixtures. “We started off on a massive high,” explained Jemima Boroughs, “Our first three games really upped the tempo;  we won all of them whilst racking up 14 goals and only conceding 4. The highlight was our 3-2 victory over Shrewsbury School. It was a really tense match, but was one that we particularly wanted to win.”

Hot on their heels were the 3rd Team, who finished 4th overall, a great achievement considering they were matched against supposedly stronger opposition. “We did really well, especially as it was our first competitive tournament,” said 3rd Team player Phoebe Jackson, “The team improved as we progressed, and the Lower 5 players did a great job of stepping up; they merged fantastically with the older members of the squad.”
