Years 12 and 13 Ages 16-18 Lower Sixth and Upper SixthMoreton Sixth is made up of about 100 students, 50 in each year group creating a friendly, close-knit community where everyone knows each other, studies and socialises together. Housed in their own new and modern accommodation, Rylands House and Charlesworth House, with en-suite study-bedrooms, dedicated sixth form common rooms, cooking and laundry facilities, Moreton Sixth students have a feeling of having graduated from the senior school, whilst still maintaining close links with the younger students. In Moreton Sixth not only do we offer the more traditional AS and A Level subjects, taught by excellent teachers in small, well-motivated groups, but we regularly review our provision of the less conventional subjects. We have recently introduced Physical Education, Psychology, History of Art, Economics and Classical Civilisation. (Download Sixth Form Guide ) Furthermore in Moreton Sixth the formal curriculum merges seamlessly with the ‘extended curriculum’ and there are many opportunities for students to add to their portfolio of interests. We pride ourselves on our excellent careers advice service. Careers lectures, seminars and discussions all help students to negotiate their way through the extensive array of higher education courses and focus on important decisions that have to be made when considering the future. There is a programme of Oxbridge discussions to ‘fine tune’ those hoping to win a place at these highly prestigious institutions. Our extremely popular Spoken English courses (ESB), boost confidence in discussion and interview situations. An extensive and expanding range of activities, sporting, musical and dramatic, all help to explain the poise and confidence of the typical Moreton student so often commented upon by visitors. Adding substantially to this self-confidence must be the unrivalled opportunities presented by Moreton Enterprises, businesses run by the Sixth Formers in which all students are encouraged to participate, and the very popular Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. ‘World View’, a series of lectures and discussions on controversial issues and current affairs, encourages pupils to become involved in topical debate. In Moreton Sixth the students also spend time contributing to our wide Community Service programme, be it volunteering in local Charity shops or helping out with Riding for the Disabled. Other courses available to Moreton Sixth include the Pitman’s Typaz course; magazine production; theatre production and a TEFL course. All of these are designed to better prepare students for their Gap years, University and beyond. There is also the option to devote time to extending culinary skills through the Leith’s Diploma course. Despite the wide range of activities, academic and non-academic, the timetable of the typical Sixth Form student still includes plenty of private study time. A great deal of self directed study is ultimately expected in the Sixth Form and the house tutor system, along with advice on study skills, is there to help the transition to becoming a mature student, ready to move on to higher education. Pupils new to Moreton are encouraged to join existing students at the 5 day Induction Course which takes place in June once the GCSE examinations have finished. The main functions of this are to assist with an informed choice of study in the years ahead and to start to adapt to the challenges and opportunities of Moreton Sixth life.
