Matthew Dennison discusses Rumer Godden on BBC Radio 3

On 6 February, to celebrate the reissue by Virago Modern Classics of a number of novels by Rumer Godden, Matthew Dennison appeared on Radio 3's arts programme, Night Waves, to discuss Godden's life and her novels. Matthew had previously written about Rumer Godden, with the assistance of her family, for The Daily Telegraph, on the occasion of the centenary of her birth. A number of Rumer Godden's lush, sensuous stories of British life in India have been made into films, including 'The River' and her best-known novel, 'Black Narcissus'.

The Night Waves feature, in which Matthew joined best-selling novelist Rosie Thomas, included excerpts from those films. At the heart of many Rumer Godden novels is a coming-of-age story played out against an exotic background - a close parallel to the story of Lucy Honeychurch in E M Forster's 'A Room with a View', which Lower Sixth English students are currently reading.
