The team members were Georgina Lang (12), Rosie Smith-Langridge (14) Phoebe Jackson (13) and Antonia Nicholls (12).

Updates posted below, as they come in, from parent Jo Nicholls. Newest first:

2013 UK Maths Team Challenge winners:
1st City of London school
2nd King Edward's Birmingham
3rd Magdalen College School, Oxford
Moreton Hall came a commendable 51st place, putting them in the top 3.2 % per cent of nationwide schools who entered. Wow!

3.50pm
Children tear around hall delivering their answers at top speed in great fun and hotly-anticipated Relay round.

3.25pm
The calm before the storm... Moreton team members Rosie Smith-Langridge and Annie Nicholls steady themselves for the frenzied and infamous Relay round. One pair from each team has to remain seated while their team-mates - seated across the room - battle to solve a question then race over to "bank" the answer with a teacher. They then "tag" their partner pair, who set about tackling another brain-spinner. Result: chaos (but very intelligent chaos).

We know, at this stage, that a crop of half a dozen League Table toppers are now heading the field (St Paul's, Wycombe Abbey, King Edward's Bham). There are still 60 points to play for in this final (mentally AND physically) exhausting round, but, in truth, if our girls are placed even midway in this high- calibre competition, they will have done brilliantly. What is already certain is they have done their absolute best.

1.50pm
"Play" has resumed after a hearty lunch. List of half dozen or so front-runners so far did not include Moreton, but scores v close. With three more rounds, contestants were reminded, everything still to play for.
Mini Relay round now, requiring teams to split into pairs and tackle further fiendish maths questions. View from the balcony shows Moreton girls with their heads down and not a bead of perspiration visible...

12.10
Poster round ends. Winning entry will be used nationwide to advertise next yr's Team Maths Challenge.

11.30am
And they're off - with a light-hearted maths ice-breaker requiring teams to design posters illustrating some devious maths concept. Another Maths dept staff member, Rachel Holland, has equipped the girls with seriously chunky markers. All-boy teams (and v large number are...) look flustered and get out compasses and set squares. Our girls grin and get on with it.

11.20am
Cunningly, school teachers have all been shuffled so that they are supervising another school's team. Maths dept's Adrian Feehan looks across wistfully across at his Moreton band from time to time...

11.05am:
Invigilator encouragingly reminds teams that they have already achieved a considerable feat in being selected from an initial 1600 schools who took part in regional heats...
Team Maths Challenge is, he stresses, "a totally non-calculator event...no mobile phones either".

Moreton have a team of four girls here (far left of pic) about to pit their wits against school pupils from all over the country any minute now...

The Maths team prepare for action...

Top Three Finish for Moreton in the English Schools Track and Field Cup 2013

Inter Girls Regional Final – 10/06/13

Moreton finished 3rd overall against schools from Warwickshire, West Midlands, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Hereford and Worcestershire. She had to compete in a variety of different events such as Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Putt and the 800m's. After the end of Monday's competition she was in the lead and went onto WIN the event for her age group on Tuesday. It was fantastic performance by a very talented athlete and sports women.

Saoirse Wins Literary Prize

Saoirse Nyhan (L5) was awarded the Peter Wheeler Prize at the Malpas Arts and Literary Festival for her short story 'The Gift'.

Having been given only the title and an hour to work with in a GCSE lesson in school, she went on to write her winning entry based around stories told to her as a child by her father. The top two entrants from her age group (11-18) went through to the finals and had their entries read out in front of a packed crowd at the Festival.

Having never entered a writing competition before Saoirse commented, "I was very surprised to win, I've always enjoyed writing but this is the first time I have ever won a prize for it." She was awarded her trophy in front of an audience of other competitors and parents.

'The Gift' will appear in this year's Moretonian Magazine.

Moreton Soirée

Parent, Jonathan Mitchell, writes:

"I’m not sure there is a better way to spend an evening, nor a prouder moment for a parent.

The wonderful Moreton Soirée last Saturday was absolutely fabulous. Musical performances from Moreton students of all ages, all instruments, all with talent, grace and endeavour.

An audience of 200 was entertained by many very accomplished musicians, whilst eating a very nice supper. My daughter Alice Mitchell has so enjoyed her time at Moreton, this was her last of many musical performances and - as has become the norm - she and her friends were outstanding!

Like so many girls at Moreton, Alice’s talent has been nurtured by very competent and committed teaching and I now sit in the audience without any fear of failure, but with absolute confidence of success.

How good does that feel ! And what a solid platform my daughter has for the rest of her life.

I know I share that feeling of parental pride with many, Alice has many talented friends at Moreton, all were wonderful at the Soirée and I have no doubt the outside world will be a better place for having them.

My sincerest thanks to all in the Moreton Music department, your professionalism and commitment are outstanding."

Alice Riding High - 4th at Stonar ODE

Alice Davies-Cooke, a talented young rider in Remove, represented the school on Saturday 18th May competing at Stonar School ODE. She rode her new pony, Felix VIII, a 9 year old, 14.2h bay gelding. She entered Class 1, a very competitive section and scored 32.5 in her dressage test before going double clear in the show jumping and cross country phases. The show jumping consisted of a very technical, twisty course with many questions which Alice and Felix jumped beautifully around and more importantly, clear, before going onto the last phase, the cross country. The cross country was a longer course than in previous years and consisted of three hedges, so Alice loved it as she and Felix galloped around well within the time limit. Well done to Alice and team Davies-Cooke for a very successful weekend.

Meres and Mosses Habitat Survey

Pupils and staff from the Science Department have attended a meeting in Ellesmere about helping conduct a Phase 1 Habitat Survey in the local area. The meeting was designed to attract attention from anyone who may be interested in helping the protection and conservation of the wildlife and waterside habitats.

The meeting was led by Luke Neal, who is the community officer at Meres and Mosses landscape partnership scheme. The Meres and Mosses is an area of international importance covered by lowland peat bogs, one of the most threatened habitats on earth, and a network of wetlands, the second largest natural network after the Lake District. We were offered the opportunity to attend a training day, which would provide us with all the necessary skills and information needed to be able to carry out the survey within an allocated part of the project area. This meeting allowed us to fully understand the importance of the work that Meres and Mosses do, and inspired us to learn more about the landscape in which we live in. We have agreed to adopt a square kilometre of the area for Moreton Eco team to build up survey information on over the next five years. We hope that this this is something that we can start and leave girls who come after us to continue. - Hannah Williams and Georgina Latham (L6).

Moreton Achieves Eight Trophy Winners at Cheshire Festival of Speech and Drama

Moreton girls had a successful day at the Cheshire Festival of Speech and Drama on the 11th of May, winning eight 1st places and trophies. Twenty-six girls took part and all performed well, including those participating for the first time. Support from the girls and parents was excellent.

Winners of trophies were:

Morgan Darcy Rees-Deacon came first in Verse Speaking (12-13) and won the James Golding Trophy

Martha Stewart came first in the Verse Reading Recital (13 and under) and won the Walker Trophy

Morgan Darcy Rees-Deacon came first in the Bible Reading (13-14) and won the Crewe Motor Company Trophy

Eliza Kiel came first in the Bible Reading (11-12) and won the Mary Connerty Memorial Trophy

Mary Richardson came first in the Poetry Reading Recital (14+) and won the Meanwood Trophy

Eliza Kiel and Halcyon Gaynor came first in the Duologues (12 and under) and won the Barley Trophy

Louisa Hunter and Helen Norman came first in the Duologues (15 and under) and won the Brook Trophy

Mary Richardson came first in the Bible Reading (15+) and won the Traverse Newton Trophy

A parents perspective by Deborah Rees Deacon:

The nerves started to build as the days edged nearer to this year’s Cheshire Festival Event. As the day arrived the sun was shining and the drive through the scenic countryside to Crewe was a nervous yet focused one, interspersed by the odd dramatic outburst of Wilfred Owen's Dulce Et Decorum Est.

As my daughter and I arrived at Ruskin Sports College, alongside the other 25 girls from Moreton, the nerves reached a crescendo as the reality of what lay ahead confronted all those present. For me as a parent, these events are filled with fascination, anticipation and excitement, feelings clearly shared amongst the strong support from the other Moreton parents who attend these events.

Each and every performance by ‘our’ girls, especially those first timers, left us feeling a mixture of both pride and relief, as our nerves and emotions were catapulted along each 'reader's journey with uplifting Biblical readings through to powerful poems of love and war, and finally to 'what teachers wear in bed?’

Luckily when it all got too much for both parents and girls alike, there was the ‘steady hand’ of Miss Halsall-Williams to guide and advise us all, whilst concurrently ensuring that these events run like clockwork.

As ever the girls excelled as success after success was recorded, and as the day ended and we said our exuberant farewells, having achieved eight first places, and a plethora of seconds and thirds, I felt the strong emotions of pride and reassurance within me. Pride at seeing these young women articulate, with such confidence and belief. Reassurance that the skills and experiences that ‘our’ girls are gaining through such events and through the full ‘Moreton Experience’ will hold them in such good stead for the future, no matter what path life leads them on.

Needless to say the drive home was much more serene!

Kinvara Wins Royal Windsor Horse Show Championship

Moreton First pupil, Kinvara Garner celebrated stunning success at this year's Royal Windsor Horse Show winning the Show Hunter Pony Championships (122cm) on her pony Woodview Cadenza. Simon Halliday, the former England rugby player, is now a big time charity fund raiser and the proceeds from the evening went towards the School Foundation and to CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young ), a charity which is close to both of them. Simon is also a main player fund raiser for Help for Heroes and is currently organising a bike ride from Paris to London and a 20:20 Cricket match with Andrew Struass and Shane Warne the two captains.

It was generous of them to give up their precious time but they did seem to enjoy it themselves, they were just about the last to leave. We learnt a lot during the evening about what it was like to work with the likes or Boris Becker and John McEnroe and the problems of Venus Williams’ dog. The mixed audience, could have asked questions from the floor for a lot longer, such was the mood on the night.

It was clear they and everyone else was very relaxed as John and Simon joined in the fun and enjoyed the excellent curry and award winning wine and beer – another memorable night at Moreton.

Chris Dixon, parent

Pictured Left to Right: John Inverdale, Kate Groves (Head of Sport), Simon Halliday

English Lacrosse Clinic

Fifteen players from Moreton Hall's U12-U14 lacrosse teams attended a clinic put on by the England Women's National Lacrosse Team last month. The girls participated in a variety of games and skills practice with the England players as coaches. They were also shown the warmup routine and drills that the England Women's team uses in training as they prepare for the World Cup in July.
All the girls present at the clinic were a part of a question and answer session where the England players covered topics including time management as an athlete, nutrition, how each of them had made the team, what the training is like at the National level, and advice for improving as a lacrosse player. The question and answer session was followed by a competitive match between all the players at the clinic, with several Moreton girls scoring goals and playing strong defensively. It was a very successful day for all who participated, and the Moreton Hall players learned a lot from these incredibly gracious and talented athletes.

Confirmation 2013

David Reffell writes:

“The Bishop of Shrewsbury, Mark Rylands, presided over Moreton Hall’s Confirmation service at St. Oswald’s Church, Oswestry in a service led by its Vicar, Simon Thorburn. The choir sang a series of inspiring anthems and the vocal ensemble performed “Make me a Light” whilst candles were lit and presented during the service. Lessons were read superbly by Emma Tilley, a friend of our Upper 5 candidate Georgie Eyre and Roisin Ni Chulachain, our Chapel Prefect.

This was a very happy occasion in which 16 girls from Lower 5 and Upper 5 were confirmed. In his sermon, the Bishop referred to how much he had enjoyed meeting the candidates for tea and how challenging and intelligent (and amusing) their questions had been. He also referred to the biographies and thoughts on their faith which all the candidates had written for him. His reflections on the example of Nicodemus were a clear message to the girls about their opportunities to “stand up for their faith.”

At tea afterwards in the school dining hall, whose murals were painted by the Bishop’s mother Denise Rylands, (whose life and commitment to the school we celebrated last year in a special Memorial Service) the girls were surrounded by parents and godparents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, and they were presented with special ‘Book of Prayers to Keep for Ever’ from the school.

During tea, the girls presented gifts to the teachers of the Confirmation classes, Sharon Crossland from Glod and Anne Ryan who has for a number of years assisted with Catholic and now ecumenical Confirmation preparation. Roisin, in a short speech at the close of the tea also thanked the Bishop and Vicar plus the fantastic church staff from St. Oswald’s and they were presented with edible and drinkable presents.

The tea was a magnificent celebration for the girls and their families and the dining room was full of smiling faces, delicious cakes, sandwiches plus our special Confirmation cake.”

OM Jessica Hatcher Nominated for Journalism Award

Old Moretonian Jessica Hatcher has reached the finals of the One World Media Awards which took place on 7th May at Kings Place London. The dancers had been working towards the show for the last year and what a spectacular it was! The dancing ranged from modern to ballet, with the Michael Jackson whole cast piece, for many, being the performance of the night!

Head of Moreton First Catherine Ford commented:

"Can I say a massive thank you for inviting MF to the dance showcase...the pupils were really enchanted by the whole thing and are now desperate for Moreton First to have more dance lessons . A decade later I found myself there again for Paul Simon’s Graceland tour. Both were extra-ordinary evenings but neither could compare with the shiver down the spine experience of stepping into the stalls to watch our daughter and her friends Georgina and Loren sing!

Harriet was one of three Moreton girls singing as part of the six hundred strong National Youth Choirs of Great Britain’s Thirtieth Anniversary Concert. Georgina Webb and Harriet, who are Soprano 1s with the Senior Girls choir, and Loren Kell, who has graduated to the Training Choir, had all spent part of their Easter break on intensive residential courses preparing for the concert. The long hours of practice (10+ hours of singing every day) clearly paid off as they filled the hall with the glorious sounds of Monteverdi’s ‘Vespers of 1610’. Described as majestic, intimate, powerful and tranquil, Monteverdi's wonderful baroque masterpiece offered opportunities for each of the choirs to showcase their sections as well as wonderful ensemble moments. With Conductor Ben Parry joined by the period sounds of the La Serenissima orchestra and the magnificent tenor soloists Mark Dobell, Benjamin Hulett and Matthew Long this was an unforgettable evening and another tribute to the fabulous musicians who make up the Moreton Hall Music Department." - Caroline Lang, Parent

Best-selling American Author Visits the School

Maggie Stiefvater, an American musician, artist and author came to school to talk about her writing career last month. She was really enthusiastic about her books and you could really tell that she loved life. She talked about what inspires her and about her style of writing. She wrote the best-selling Shiver trilogy and the novel The Scorpio Races.

The Shiver Trilogy spent more than 40 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller List. In 2010, Linger debuted at the number one spot on the New York Times Bestseller List. Her most-recent book, The Raven Boys, is the first in a series of four that will follow Blue Sargent, daughter of the Henrietta, the town psychic, as she becomes involved with the lives of four students at the local boys' private school who call themselves the Raven Boys.

Maggie was full of enthusiasm and she was very funny. He is involved in a national project in Lithuania to improve the quality of learning through using more creative teaching methods, and together with Lithuanian colleagues trained a group of fifty teachers in the country over a series of workshops. These teachers now have the task to develop more creative approaches to specific topics in the science curriculum and then spread these ideas more widely to all schools in the country. The project is coordinated by the Lithuanian Ministry of Education and funded by the European Union and Dr Hindson will be returning to Lithuania later in the year to monitor the project.

Whilst in Lithuania Dr Hindson was invited to meet with a small group of University students taking part in an EU funded Young Entrepreneurs Project. The students were suitably impressed and hopefully the presentation and discussion stimulated a few new ideas!

Message from Jonathan Forster

Dear Parents and friends,

We're up and running again, refreshed and already into GCSEs!

I thought that there would be no better time to tell all Parents and Friends of the school of further developments which will co-incide with our Centenary.

For some time we have seen a growth in boarding across the whole school, particularly in Moreton First.

To address that 'problem'- and what a great problem to have! - we have decided to create brand new boarding accommodation in Moreton First (the Toblerone) to accommodate approximately 20 boarders on a full-time, part-time or occasional basis in small dorms with excellent bathroom and recreational facilities.

Also, again, in response to demand, we will welcome boys (up to the age of eleven) as boarders into Moreton First. They will have their own separate boarding area in the Toblerone, supervised by both male and female staff.

The housemistress overseeing all Moreton First boarding will be Mrs Grainne Dennison, who will live in a flat in the Toblerone, with husband Matthew and son Aeneas.

Mrs Dennison will also become Year Six class teacher in Moreton First and will continue to teach in the Senior school.

The development of this extra facility will also allow for the increase in boarding numbers in The Stables, so ably managed by Mrs Parry who has been asking for extra beds for some time!

The creation of new dorms in the Toblerone will be facilitated by the re-location of the Health Centre to a brand new, purpose built sanatorium.

This building will be located on the grass adjacent to the existing Health Centre, and will comprise 3 ensuite bedrooms, a consulting room, nurse’s room and waiting area.

Mrs Dennison's move to Moreton First creates a vacancy in Lloyd-Williams which will be more-than-adequately filled by the appointment of Mrs Charlie Dilkes as Housemistress, who will work closely with Miss Hughes as Senior Housemistress.

Mrs Dilkes will be ably supported by husband Jim and children Alex and Christopher!

As ever, there will be more to come in terms of developments over the term, but as you will surmise we are all in excellent spirits as spring finally arrives!

A fuller e newsletter will follow next week, but in the meantime, with all good wishes,

Jonathan Forster

Moreton Update Spring Term 2013

The Spring Term Moreton Update is now out.
Read it online by clicking here.

International Call up for Moreton Girls

Two Moreton girls played for Wales on the 17th March in the U19 Lacrosse Junior Home Internationals against England and Scotland in Guildford. The Team did exceptionally well by beating Corbet School, The Grove School and The Marches in the pool rounds to make it to the semi-final where they played Ellesmere College. It was a nail biting semi-final in which Moreton won 2-1. In the final the team faced a very strong and well organised Lakelands Team who had also won all their matches. The Moreton team played superbly well, kept position and got the goals in when it counted and won the game 5-3. The team members were (L-R), Georgina Lang (12), Rosie Smith-Langridge (14) Phoebe Jackson (13) and Antonia Nicholls (12). The four girls will now compete against teams from across the United Kingdom in the National Final at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on 17thJune.

Head of Maths, Mike Swain comments: "The UKMT Team Challenges promote mathematical dexterity, team working, and communication skills. Over 1,500 schools sent their very best young mathematicians to take part in the competition so it is an incredible achievement for our team to qualify for the national finals."

Antonia Nicholls Lower 4 writes:

Four Moreton Hall girls travelled to Birkenhead School to compete in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge. When we arrived we went into the hall and took our places alongside 25 others schools from the North West. We began with some 'easy' practice questions before the 1st round commenced: 10 questions in 40 minutes. We worked as a team to complete these questions and had time to double and then triple check them between us. The results themselves for this round were not announced but we were told we were joint first with a number of other schools. Next came the crossword challenge where we were split into pairs and given either the across or the down questions but were not allowed to talk directly to each other. We managed to complete this under a lot of pressure in just under the time limit with only 3 mistakes. Then was the mini relay in which we had a card with a problem on it, the other half of the team needing our answer to complete their own, then us using their answer and so on. Finally was the full relay. Again, we were split into pairs but this time we were a hall apart and after solving the problem we had to dash to the teacher who would mark it and then give us the next problem which we would speedily deliver to the other pair. We finished this with ample time and only one wrong answer. After all this and a good lunch we came back for the awards but we were not certain where we were placed. After a nervous wait it was announced that we had won - admittedly we did shriek a bit! We are really proud and can't wait until the finals in London on 17th of June.

Divisional Performing Arts Competition

Grainne Dennison writes:

For those of you who are yet to experience a Divisional competition, please note that noise levels would compete with the crowd’s response to Mo Farrer’s last lap in the Olympics. For energy, talent and an extraordinary display of team spirit the Moreton Hall Divisional Performing Arts Competition would beat the Oscars hands down!

From the moment Rose Booth and Alice Mitchell launched into Vincent’s Got Talent (“We’re going northern tonight – we can’t do a Geordie accent”) to Calvert’s Radio 4-style puppet routine based on the staff room, it was superb.

Staff and judges alike ricocheted between emotions of tear-inducing hilarity and fear that they would be the next victims. Yet the Moreton spirit was alive and well, and the girls can only be congratulated on sketches that were funny but never cruel. (Kitty Peel’s impersonation of Mr Reffell doing his “crucial” exercises was only matched by Grace Lovell’s capture of Mrs Tilley as head girl).

The younger girls sang, danced and played their guitars. Older ones threw self-consciousness (and sometimes good sense) to the four winds as they capered on stage.

It was an event that showed Moreton at its best. Yes, the girls have talent. Yes, they have drive. Perhaps more importantly, they have a tremendous sense of esprit de corps.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze

Georgina Blake, Margaret Pound, Erin Leatherbarrow and Isabella James, all L5, write about their DofE trip:

Twenty one girls, seven staff and one dog navigated their way around forest land near to Betws-y-coed for our first DofE walk this year. Not many injuries were sustained during the walk but fortunately there were a few minor blisters which allowed Mr Lang to use his super huge, brand new first aid kit which he had bought just for the occasion.

We all had a really good time. Fifty six 1st Teams were competing in the Championships, with 7 schools in each of the 8 sections.

Moreton's 1st Team had an exceptional first day scoring a total of 35 goals and only 4 against them and only one loss in the final game of the day. They played the following:

v St George's, Harpenden WON 7-0

v St Swithuns C WON 6-2

v St James WON 9-1

v Walthamstow Hall WON 6-0

v Westonbirt WON 7-0

v Wycombe Abbey Lost 0-1

These results secured the 1st Team a place in the Championship Group on day two, which includes the Top 14 schools. Left behind after day one were many larger rivals such as Cheltenham Ladies College, Stowe, Marlborough College, Malvern St, James, Haberdashers Monmouth, St Helen's and St Katherine's, Queen Anne's Caversham, Queen Margaret's and Harrogate Ladies College.

It was a tough day of play however in true style the Moreton players fought hard in every match. After losing their first 4 matches by narrow margins the Moreton 1st Team were determined not to go home without a win and produced some outstanding games of Lacrosse by beating Haberdashers Aske School for Girls 2-1 and Beneden School in their last match 2-0. The lessons were very useful but the highlights were the free time in the Plaza Mayor and seeing the whole square illuminated at night and visiting the university buildings. We loved the varied restaurants and food, especially the chocolate churros and tapas! One day we went up on to the roof of the cathedral - it was amazing looking out over beautiful Salamanca. We felt our Spanish came on a lot and it gave us a lot more confidence with speaking the language.

Moreton’s First London Marathon Runner

As if studying for A Levels and being Captain of the First Lacrosse team is not enough to have on your plate, Upper 6 student -Rose Booth - has decided to join 35,000 others and take part in the London Marathon on 21st April.

Rose believes she is the first girl from Moreton to ever attempt the 26.2 miles and aims to raise £1,750 for The Outward Bound Trust: an educational charity with a difference.

‘They use the mountains, lakes, rivers and sea as their classroom and teach children self-confidence, the ability to take risks and manage decisions, improved communication skills and insights into teamwork. Out of 109 entries from Remove to L5, 72 pupils received Distinctions, 35 Merit+ and 2 Merit awards.

Head of Spoken English, Merriel Halsall-Williams, remarks: “These are an excellent set of results. All the girls had prepared well and worked really hard to achieve these results. They presented their talks with confidence.”

Flora Moreau (L4) Describes the ESB Experience

On the 4th of February, I was more nervous than I've ever been before: it was the day of my ESB exam. We were put into groups of six, and we then went to the English block and we had to recite a poem, read a reading, and the had to give a four minute talk on a topic of our choice.

There was a lot of variety through all the sections. In my group there were poems about murders and poems about snowmen, there was Wolf Brother and Anne of Greene Gables, and overcoming disability to the Mona Lisa. Our adjudicator was really nice; he always had positive comments, even though I wasn't expecting some of the questions he asked me! We got lots of help from English lessons too, when we would listen to a poem/reading/talk and then would ask questions and criticise on what we just heard. ESB was always my favourite out of the spoken English exams I have done. That Monday was definitely a good day; I listened to some great poems, was on a cliff hanger during some of the readings, and got a Hummingbird Bakery cupcake at the end, to top it all off.

Rotary “Youth Speaks” Area Finals

Three Moreton Hall girls, representing Oswestry Rotary Club, competed in the Area Finals of the Rotary “Youth Speaks” competition held at Theatre Clwyd on Friday, 8th February.

Alice Williams acted as Chairman, Isabella Owens the vote of thanks and Martha Stewart – the main speaker – chose “Dyslexic, but Not Stupid” as her topic.

The Moreton team has now qualified to progress to the regional finals on Saturday 23rd March in Preston.

Moreton's Head of Spoken English, Merriel Halsall-Williams commented: “The girls spoke with clarity and enthusiasm and, considering they were the youngest in the Intermediate Finals, they presented themselves with impressive confidence.”

Road Closure

Please be aware that from Monday 18th February the rail crossing on Station Road outside the back drive of the school will be closed for up to two weeks. Two local secondary schools also found the event highly valuable and brought along 40 of their students.

Seminars on subjects such as Choosing the Best University, Taking a Gap Year, Studying and Working in History of Art and Applying to Oxford and Cambridge - were all well supported. Matthew had previously written about Rumer Godden, with the assistance of her family, for The Daily Telegraph, on the occasion of the centenary of her birth. A number of Rumer Godden's lush, sensuous stories of British life in India have been made into films, including 'The River' and her best-known novel, 'Black Narcissus'.
The Night Waves feature, in which Matthew joined best-selling novelist Rosie Thomas, included excerpts from those films. At the heart of many Rumer Godden novels is a coming-of-age story played out against an exotic background - a close parallel to the story of Lucy Honeychurch in E M Forster's 'A Room with a View', which Lower Sixth English students are currently reading.

Moreton Wins Scottish Open Lacrosse Tournament

Moreton hall took a team made up of U15 and U16 players to compete in the 1st Team Tournament against schools from England and Scotland. The difference between studying a building in a classroom in Shropshire and visiting one is vast. Standing in front of the houses of parliament we were able to really appreciate the building as the architects intended. You can understand why the building is so iconic: the beauty and sheer scale are both quite striking.

Mrs Lingard had organised a tour of the building which gave us privileged access to the architecture and history in close quarters.

We also went to the Banqueting House, St Pancras Station and The National Portrait Gallery where we saw Emsley’s ‘vampire-like’, ‘gum chewing’ Kate Middleton. For all of us, the day was genuinely fantastic and a great opportunity to both learn and admire renowned works of art.

- Chole Whittaker (L6)

In The Footsteps of Tudors

To think I walked in the footsteps of many royals from the Tudor time, that I crossed the path upon which Catherine Howard was dragged screaming after her arrest by Henry VIII’s guards was awe inspiring.

When we arrived at Hampton Court there was a humongous palace awaiting us with two Royal residence guides in beefeater style uniform either side of the gate.

First we went to the kitchen where we saw where all the meat used to be chopped for Henry VIII. In Tudor time they only ever ate the meat in meat pies never the pastry. Henry VIII served his servants quality meat.

Then we saw the amazing replica of the crown that was worn by Henry. It had many sapphires, emeralds and rubies but is not as valuable as the real crown.

We went into a chapel and apparently the only thing that was from the Tudor time was the ceiling which was three dimensional and beautifully painted.

There is said to be a ghost in Hampton Court: In 1542 Catherine Howard was dragged along the floor screaming to her room to be placed under house arrest and apparently you can still hear the screaming today.

Our next stop was the National Portrait Gallery right next to Trafalgar Square. On our journey there we saw all the main features of London: Big Ben, London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square and the Houses of Parliament and more…

In the National Portrait Gallery we saw the portrait of Kate Middleton, which was outstanding (although I thought it made her look a bit old!). We saw lots of Tudor portraits to bring alive our studies of the period.

A great school trip with never a boring moment!”

By Helen Norman

Drawings by Morgan Darcy Rees-Deacon

Moreton Ranked as Top School In County for EBacc

League tables published today by the Department for Education reveal that Moreton Hall’s GCSE candidates were Shropshire’s top performers in the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) in 2012, ranking the non-selective independent school above all of its highly selective counterparts such as Shrewsbury School, Shrewsbury High School and Concord College.

So what is the EBacc?

The EBacc measures how many pupils achieve a grade A*-C GCSE in English, maths, two sciences, a language and history or geography, which many educationalists class as a move towards a more "rounded education".

Education Secretary Michael Gove said: "Subjects such as physics, chemistry, history, geography, French and German give students the opportunity to succeed in every field. The numbers studying a proper range of rigorous subjects has been in decline. Now, thanks to our English Bacc, that has changed. More young people are now following the courses which the best colleges and top employers value."

Jonathan Forster comments: “Being the top school in the county is very satisfying. Moreton Hall is supportive of the move towards ensuring all students perform well in the EBacc subjects. We work very closely with universities and employers to make sure that we are equipping our pupils with the right skill set for highly successful careers and EBacc is an important part of this.”

Link to Data | PAGE LINK

Some of Moreton Hall’s GCSE High fliers who between them achieved 43 A*s and 11As, and 100% EBacc scores.

- Back L to R Laura Mercer Natalya Kahn Georgina Latham

- Front - Madeline Rolfe Teya Drew

Impressive Inspection Report for Moreton Hall

‘Excellent’, ‘outstanding’ and ‘exemplary’ were just some of the epithets used by Inspectors in the recent Independent Schools’ Inspectorate report for Moreton Hall which was published this month.

Jonathan Forster comments: “The entire report makes excellent reading and reflects the school’s success both inside and outside the classroom. We are particularly gratified by the inspectors’ recognition that ‘pupils’ achievement is excellent’, ‘pupils’ attitudes to learning are outstanding’, ‘the curriculum and extra-curricular programme are excellent’, that we provide ‘excellent pastoral care’, ‘exemplary cultural development’ and ‘excellent support and guidance from all staff.’

The school’s Nursery and the Early Years Foundation Stage in Moreton First were also classed as ‘outstanding’ by the inspectors.

“This is a fantastic inspection report, the best we have ever had, but we will never rest on our laurels,” adds Mr Forster. “Our new Science Centre and Medical Science Faculty are now being built and demonstrate that there are always inspiring ways to make even the best schools even better.”

Download The Full Report | PDF

Moreton First Raises £100 for Hope House

The pupils from Moreton First raised £100 for Hope House which they presented to the charity this week. The documentary examined Victoria's relationship with her nine children - the youngest of whom, Beatrice, was the subject of Matthew's first biography, 'The Last Princess'. Interviews were filmed in the London house which had previously been used as the chief location in the film, 'The King's Speech'. Offering insight into the filming of the documentary, Matthew explained: 'I was grilled for three hours about every angle of Queen Victoria's relationships with her children and was then pounced upon intermittently by a very conscientious make up artist and - alarmingly - Boris Johnson's hairdresser. It was quite an experience!'

Autumn Term Moreton Update

Please find a link below to the e-Moreton Update for the Autumn Term; 28 pages of news, articles, photos, slide shows, video, Old Moretonian reunions and more.

The e-magazine can be viewed on any mobile device but is best viewed on a desk-top or laptop where the electronic links will take you to full slide shows, video, and other links.

Do give us your feedback to help us with future editions.

Read the Moreton Update

Moreton Astronomers in Cork

Four astronomers – Jenny Billing (U6), Chloe Whittaker (L6), Maddie Rolfe (L6) and Holly Dempster-Edwards (U5) – visited Cork and the surrounding areas, at the most recent meeting of the six European schools which participate in the Comenius Project. The aim of the day was to teach both students and staff how best to prepare for the leap from studying History at school to working for a History degree at University. The day proved invaluable. The transition between Sixth Form and University is great for most subjects, but it was useful to find out exactly what was required of a University Historian. There was the opportunity to visit Cambridge Library at mid-day and Jess and I were interested to see a large display of 20th Century books on Russian architecture and design collected by Catherine Cooke. After a delicious lunch in one of the colleges, we were divided into small groups and participated in a seminar identical to those at University on Sutton Hoo. In the afternoon, there was a challenging, interview-style presentation delivered by Dr Peter Claus, Senior Research fellow in History at Pembroke College Oxford. We were forced to think outside the box and to respond to sources and images we were not familiar with, trying to make a coherent interpretation on the spot. It was a very valuable day and a wonderful experience.

- Vita Unwin U6

Aspiring Medic Has Paper Published

Aspiring Upper 6 medic, Millie Adams-Davies, has recently published her first paper. “Medlink invited me to submit a paper on a gedanken experiment (thought experiment) about stem cells. We listened to talks by professors and doctors from across the UK covering everything from how DNA was discovered to current DNA research. Our aspiring medics were really interested in the talk that outlined the new potential treatments that could avoid babies having mitochondrial disease passed onto them by their mothers. There was a fascinating talk on how the native plants of Wales are being DNA barcoded to help with records and another on how the knowledge of genes is used to help conserve the most endangered animals in the world.
- Georgina Muir (U6)

Bronwen Society: The Role of the Military in the Modern World

Being part of the generation that has been brought up with daily news of the war in Afghanistan (and admittedly not understanding what was happening most of the time), I was particularly interested in how the UK got involved in the war and what the future holds. Upper Sixth students, Alice and Julia Duncan talk about their decision to apply to Harvard University.

"The fact that our brother went to Harvard and enjoyed the experience so much is what initially sparked our interest in US Universities, in particular Harvard. We wanted to study in America as it gave us the opportunity to gain a large breadth of education which is possible in the liberal arts and sciences structure. To be able to ‘shop’ for courses in the 1st year is very appealing as it gives us the chance to develop interests in a wide range of topics and find a vocation. Another reason which drew us to US Universities was the ability to combine Visual Arts with all fields of study, including Science, an opportunity unavailable in the UK."

To read the full account, download the PDF by clicking here.

Grainne Dennison Talks at Bronwyn Society

Last Tuesday evening the Senior Bronwyn Society, once again, provided students and parents with an utterly enthralling talk, this time delivered by resident academic Grainne Dennison. The subject (especially suitable for us at an all-girls school) was ‘Blue Stockings’ – the first women to attend Universities. Our attention was captured from the very start, with a moving extract read to us by Grainne, where we learnt of the struggle of working class Oxford student ‘Trixy’. We learnt some truly shocking facts. A leading doctor in the 19th Century believed that women’s brains were actually 13 grams lighter than men’s, and feared that the academic rigor of a University degree would cause their wombs to shrivel up! We learnt how, in spite of popular sexist beliefs such as these, the best efforts of ex-graduates from Oxbridge, and a limited secondary education the women fought not just to be allowed to attend Universities, but to actually graduate with a degree. The talk was truly informative, witty and captivated us all. We now can send off our University applications appreciating the determination and strength of the women who fought for our right to an equal education.

By Vita Unwin and Victoria Bull

History at Moreton Hall

The History department is fizzing with new developments. The A Level “team” with an enthusiastic “gaggle” of younger historians are working on a new historical magazine for girls, staff and parents. Our new History Film Society has got underway and films to be screened will include “The Other Boleyn Girl” for all keen history buffs, whether studying the subject or simply lovers of Tudor romance. Two of our Upper Sixth girls, aiming to study History at a top University, are heading to Cambridge for a Conference about “raising historical skills from school to University standard” next week. Whilst The Culture Club, led by Mrs. Dennison, has had sessions on a wide variety of topics including the fascinating Mitford sisters and Pre-Raphaelite Art.

Shropshire Lacrosse Club

Every Wednesday Starting 14th November

Over the last term the sport department has been working on many developments in Lacrosse and one of those has been to start a Community Lacrosse Club here at Moreton.

The new Shropshire Lacrosse Club will be held every Wednesday between 6.00-7.00pm on the All Weather Pitch. It was an excellent opportunity to revise the DNA profiling chapter in our current curriculum, and we were given the chance to profile our own DNA with gel electrophoresis. We focused on a particular protein- the PTC receptor protein known as the TAS2R38 gene- which is linked with the ability to be able to taste the chemical PTC. The majority of the class were either non-tasters or weak tasters of PTC, although Millie was the exception with her impressive reaction to the "vile" taste of the chemical!

Inaugural French Verse Speaking Competition at Moreton Hall

Moreton Hall played host to over 100 children for its inaugural 'French Verse Speaking Competition' last Friday (November 9th). Children from schools in Shropshire and Cheshire of ages 9-13 recited French poetry at Moreton's first competition of its kind. 'We are host to the Shropshire Festival of Verse and Prose each year and all of our girls are involved in Spoken English classes', explains Head of French, Lesley Eyre. 'We thought it would a fun challenge to extend this to the French lessons. We were delighted with the enthusiasm shown by the participating schools.'

Account of the Day from Annie Nicholls:

Bonjour! On the 9th of November a large number of Moreton Hall girls took part in the French verse speaking competition. This was the first time that Moreton had held such an event and it was a great success. Pupils from schools such as Packwood, Prestfelde and Terra Nova all competed in our competition. There were two or three poems that you could choose for your class which was according to your age (years 5 , 6, 7 & 8). The adjudicators were very nice and welcomed us up one by one to recite our poems. We had had a couple of chances to practise in class and we went through the pronunciation before the competition. I found it really good fun and think that it will be a great annual event for Moreton.
