It is not often that we have visitors at Moreton First who arrive with a sword!
However we were all delighted to welcome Mr Charles Lillis who is the High Sheriff of Shropshire. Mr Lillis explained the history of the position he holds, which dates back to medieval times and is the oldest secular office under the Crown. Formerly the High Sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial.
The children were fascinated with the costume which he wears on special occasions but the sword was the high point of the visit although Mr Lillis promises he has never had to use it ...yet!
